Approach

At MissionPoint, we approach impact investing with
four core elements to our philosophy:

CUSTOM INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

01. CUSTOM INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

Every family, foundation, and institution approaches impact investing with different values, risk tolerances, return expectations, and sectors of interest. We design a customized impact investment policy statement and reporting metrics framework that connects impact investment activity to broader organizational goals.

RESEARCH & PROBLEM DRIVEN

02. RESEARCH & PROBLEM DRIVEN

The world's social and environmental challenges are massive in scope. Before making an investment, MissionPoint first researches a sub-sector in depth to identify leverage points where a small amount of capital can galvanize additional follow-on investment to propel an innovation to scale. We believe that demonstrating strong, consistent financial returns is one of the best mechanisms for attracting large amounts of capital to solve large environmental problems.

Example sectors where our team has conducted deep research include:

  • Climate change mitigation
  • Climate change adaptation and resiliency
  • Municipal solid waste recycling
  • Food and organic waste
  • Local food systems
  • Urban water infrastructure
  • Environmental finance innovation

Example Research & Problem Driven Project:

MissionPoint led the development of a "Climate Resilient & Equitable Water Systems Capital Scan" for The Kresge Foundation, with support from California Environmental Associates. This scan evaluated a pipeline of over 100 water investment opportunities to develop a set of recommended integrated strategies that utilize the full suite of capital tools available to The Kresge Foundation. The Capital Scan then linked these strategies to a short list of active investments that could serve to unlock the flow of capital in the water sector.

FULL SPECTRUM CAPITAL

03. FULL SPECTRUM CAPITAL

MissionPoint began with a focus on managing venture capital and private equity investments. Over time, our focus has expanded to any funding structure that best solves the larger problem. For organizations looking to achieve impact across asset classes, our team has developed a multi-manager, multi-asset class framework for integrating direct investments with passively-managed funds. MissionPoint has also catalyzed transformational initiatives that galvanize the full spectrum of philanthropic and investment capital.

Example Philanthropic Project:

MissionPoint worked with a coalition of a dozen foundations to develop the first multi-stakeholder national action plan to reduce food waste in the United States at scale. Learn more at www.ReFED.com.

VALUE BEYOND CAPITAL

04. VALUE BEYOND CAPITAL

MissionPoint's unique direct investment platform allows investors flexibility in allocating capital to individual companies while gaining the efficiencies and diligence of a larger professional investment management team. We work closely with the CEOs of our portfolio companies to achieve their full potential by tapping our active network of corporates, nonprofits, and investors.

HISTORY

MissionPoint Capital Partners was originally formed in 2006 as a private investment firm established by Jesse M. Fink, co-founder and former Chief Operating Officer of priceline.com; Mark J. Cirilli, former Chief Investment Officer of Marshall Street Management; and Mark Schwartz, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Soros Fund Management and former Chairman of Goldman Sachs (Asia).

Missionpoint Capital

MissionPoint Capital Partners initially focused on high-growth venture capital and private investment opportunities created by the accelerating demand for clean, secure energy and the large-scale transition to a low carbon global economy.

In 2014, MissionPoint Partners was established as an impact investment manager and advisor focused on solving large-scale environmental problems through the deployment of high impact capital. We began serving select families and foundations to help achieve social change at scale while preserving rigorous financial oversight.
